The 2nd-highest of the famed Seven Summits, just behind Mt. Everest, Mt. Aconcagua is the highest peak in the Americas and is just begging to be climbed.

Situated only 9 miles from Chile, this grandiose peak is surrounded by twisting, turning rivers, low, sprawling valleys, and colorful rocky terrain, making the view from the summit a true sight to behold. Getting there is quite the quest, though.

Speckled with base camps at various elevations, the climb itself is challenging, but not overly technical or extreme, making it ideal for both newer high-altitude climbers and veterans alike, who are looking to check a climber’s dream off their bucket list.

Don’t be fooled, though. The weather is unpredictable, and the terrain can be rough, so Aconcagua will certainly keep you on your toes.

Only about 60% of climbers who attempt it reach the summit, but those who do are rewarded handsomely with a 1st-class view of the Andes in all their snow-peaked glory.

Because of its intense climate and towering elevation, the wildlife of Aconcagua is few and far between, but it’s there. As you scale and hike, watch for signs of the red fox, lizards and other amphibians, wild hares, large herds of guanacos, and even the notorious puma, known for its stealth and solitary lifestyle. Rarely seen by humans, you may get lucky and see a paw print or two, proof that they’re out there somewhere.
